Good old classic

Reading this was at first a little slow but once you understood the style it was good reading. The writer gave you want great picture of life in cossack village and their freedoms.

pluses and minuses

Tolstoy's story is wonderful; descriptions exacting and intense; connections to emotion amazing. I worked almost three years in the Republic of Georgia, and the experiences of Dmetri Olenin remind me, in many ways, of my own in the Caucuses. Just as Tolstoy and Olenin, I was struck by the natural beauty and granduer of the mountains and countryside; the beauty, complexity and zest for life of the people. The Caucasus, however, is also a land of contradictions: beauty and ugliness, simplicity and complexity. Tolstoy experienced it and was able to put his experiences to paper beautifully. The excellent illustrations add to one's enjoyment of the text. I give the story and the illustrations FIVE STARS.
The translation, on the other hand, seems lacking and poor in many instances. I have little doubt that a better more precise translation would create a greater, more accurate understanding of Tolstoy's story and meaning. It appears that the translators sat down with a Russian-English dictionary and used the first word they encountered to use, without consideration of the flavor, mood, or setting of the text and culture Tolstoy is writing about. That is why I give this particular edition three stars.

Fairly good short work by Tolstoy

I'm a great fan of "War and Peace" and "Anna Karenina". This Tolstoy story is much shorter, and while good, is a little less interesting. The book mostly focuses on the simple story and gives less insight into the Cossack and Chechen cultures that I had hoped. The story seems to reflect the reports that Tolstoy had a desire to personally live among the "common" people.

Miracles of healing were nothing new to the Steinkamps. In 1985, their marriage of nineteen years was paralyzed by a divorce. Charlyne turned to the Lord for His healing touch. Two years later, Bob and Charlyne were remarried to each other.

After his recovery, Bob desired to attend a marriage conference in Tulsa, Oklahoma. His medical condition did not allow him to fly, so he drove, alone. Throughout that journey, the Lord spoke to Bob, reminding him time and time again, how precious was his health and his marriage. Rejoice on the Road is a report of that journey that will bless and encourage you.

A gentle blend of wisdom, hope and love for prodigals & standers alike

Bob's unique writing style takes you with him, through those roads he travels along the book. It is written as a conversation between him and you the reader, as a friend. It only took me a few pages to realise I would enjoy the journey. It is full of Biblical wisdom in a very contemporary and relatable environment. I am still to finish reading it, because I don't want to finish reading. Yes, it is that good. I didn't just learn about marriage restoration (although the book does an excellent job at teaching about that), but also about everyday subjects Bob probably didn't realise his book would teach too. This book is a gentle cocktail of hope, wisdom, love and again...love. Thank you Bob. And a great thanks to God for using Bob to share these little lessons with us. I will stand for my marriage restoration. And along the way, I'll make sure to pick up all the lessons God has for me.

About the Author
Robert Bogdan is Distinguished Professor of Social Science at Syracuse University. He is the author of many books including Exposing the Wilderness: Early Twentieth-Century Adirondack Postcard Photographers and Adirondack Vernacular: The Photography of Harry M. Beach, both published by Syracuse University Press. His column on real photo postcards is a monthly feature in the magazine The Postcard Collector. Todd Weseloh was the librarian/archivist at the Erie Canal Museum in Syracuse and has been an active collector of postcards since 1976.

In the thirty five years of collecting postcards, with real photo post cards my speciality, there has never been a good book, until now covering this subject.

This book of 274 pages covers all aspects of what one would ever wish to know about this form of collectiing. Major chapter headings are: Introduction, Fundamentals, Photographers & Careers, Dimensions of Desirability,Collecting Categories, Objects to Treasure, Sitting in the Graveyard & Conclusion. Each chapter has many subdivisions, very well marked in the table of contents by page number. At the end is a very complete appendix & index. Being on the subject of photographs there are naturally a great number, totaling around 270.

The only reason I did not rate this 5 star is that the quality of the photo reproduction is not in keeping with the tremendous efforts the authors have put into this book. Though the photos are O.K., with todays technology, I feel the publisher let the authors down.

Collectors have been waiting a long time for a book like this, & I very much doubt that there is more to be said on this subject. The authors are to be congradulated on a job well done.

Encyclopedic but with an artist eye

What makes this book exceptional is that it provides both a good history, and fundamentals, while including around 300 superb examples of real photo cards. For the text there is a quick history of postcards and photography. For those trying to date cards, there are good hints, and the inclusion of appendix on dating based on stamps and the backs is a big help. By looking at the background of a few photographers, the reader is help to understand the life of a professional photographer of the time. This is supplemented by a discussion on how the author researched the life of photographer William Mandeville, and the appendix includes a brief paragraph on around 200 photographers. The longest chapter is on categories, with over 100 examples, and some favorites included "After shooting the oil tank", ""Calvin Coolidge plowing", and an early Coca-cola delivery truck.

Why I have purchased this book TWICE

Real Photo Postcards are the under-appreciated stepchild of early Photography. Just as scarce and just as interesting as ANY early vernacular photographic technique, it is still possible to assemble a good collection at an affordable price. This book taught me everything I needed to know the first time I put together a nice RPPC collection...and it is doing the same as I do it again. At this point, by far the best book on the subject!

About the Author
Marianne Woodside, Professor Emerita, was affiliated with the Human Services, Mental Health Counseling, and Counselor Education programs at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She taught introduction to human services, case management, methods of helping, and foundations of counselor education, and supervises practicum and internship. Her primary research interests are international human services, human service education, and case management. Dr. Woodside has served on the editorial boards for Journal of Human Service Education, American Association for Counseling and Development Journal, and Tennessee Counseling Journal. Additionally, she served as vice-president of regional development and secretary of the National Organization for Human Services Education. Dr. Woodside has published a wide range of journal articles and has an extensive record of presentations at national and international meetings. Her many awards include the Distinguished Recognition Award from the Council for Standards in Human Service Education, the Professional Development Research Award from the National Organization for Human Services Education, the Helen B. Watson Outstanding Faculty Research Award, and the Educator's Hall of Honor Award. With Tricia McClam, Dr. Woodside is co-author of AN INTRODUCTION TO HUMAN SERVICES (9th Ed.), AN INTRODUCTION TO HUMAN SERVICES: CASES AND APPLICATIONS (8th Ed.), GENERALIST CASE MANAGEMENT: A METHOD OF HUMAN SERVICE DELIVERY (5th Ed.), PROBLEM SOLVING IN THE HELPING PROFESSIONS, HELPING PROCESS: ASSESSMENT TO TERMINATION, and INTERVIEWING: WHAT STUDENTS WANT TO KNOW. Watson Outstanding Faculty Research Award in the College of Education, the Dean's Award for Service, a Certificate of Appreciation from the Council for Standards in Human Service Education, and the Miriam Clubok Award from the National Organization for Human Service Education.
