Simona Ţuţuianu describes a new model of sovereignty which is fast replacing the traditional Westphalian model embodied in Article 2 of the UN Charter and rigorously followed throughout the Cold War. The scholarly basis for this new model draws upon developments in international criminal law which first emerged from the Nuremberg trials and upon more recent interstate economic cooperation which has turned sovereign independence into interdependence across a range of state functions. Does this mean that traditional Westphalian concepts of sovereignty should be abandoned in constructing a new theory of world governance for the twenty-first century? Not at all. A new model, which can be called the pattern of interdependence-based sovereignty, serves to explain contemporary events that puzzle traditional theorists, such as the war over Kosovo, the invasions of Iraq and Libya, the emergence of a “Responsibility to protect” doctrine and its recent validation in Security Council Resolutions 1970 and 1973. We are witnessing the emergence of a new philosophy of action, which is in the process of producing a 21st century system of international relations.

Lieutenant Colonel Simona Ţuţuianu is a Senior Researcher with the Institute for Political Studies of Defense and Military History in Romania. She holds a Ph.D. in International Relations and worked as a diplomat with the Permanent Mission of Romania to the United Nations. Currently, she serves as a member of the Secretariat of the Regional Stability within the Greater Black Sea Area Working Group of the PfP Consortium of Defense Academies and Security Studies Institutes, and teaches political ethics at Titu Maiorescu University of Bucharest.

About the Author
Stefan Zweig was born in 1881 in Vienna, into a wealthy Austrian-Jewish family. He studied in Berlin and Vienna and was first known as a poet and translator, then as a biographer. Between the wars, Zweig was an international bestseller with a string of hugely popular novellas including Letter from an Unknown Woman, Amok and Fear. In 1934, with the rise of Nazism, he left Austria, and lived in London, Bath and New York—a period during which he produced his most celebrated works: his only novel, Beware of Pity, and his memoir, The World of Yesterday. He eventually settled in Brazil, where in 1942 he and his wife were found dead in an apparent double suicide. Much of his work is available from Pushkin Press.

Tales of Vienna

The only book I had ever read by Stefan Zweig is "The World of Yesterday," which is a fascinating memoir, not only of a man but of a time and place (Vienna at the turn of the 20th century). Now I see Zweig as a master of the short story as well. The best story in this collection is the eponymous novella, "Letter from an Unknown Woman," and, although written in 1922, it still packs a whallop today. The writing is exquisite and the story mesmerizing, but it is the unknown woman's quiet, yet all-consuming fascination with the young musician that grabs hold of the imagination and won't let go.What possesses her to give her life to a man she has only "met" on three rather mundane occasions? There's something very modern about this tale, even though it is rooted in the Vienna of Zweig's youth. I have ordered a copy of the Max Ophuls film (with Joan Fontaine and Louis Jourdan), which is also considered a masterpiece, and look forward to reading more of Zweig's stories, this time in the original German. The other three stories in the collection are also highly recommended.

The tragedy of passionately mad and unrequited love

This gem seems not to be available in an English translation any more, more's the pity. Zweig's stories usually show amazing psychological insight. it is perhaps this sensitivity that led the twentieth-century Jewish Austrian, shipwrecked from an era mercilessly blown away by the tides of WWII, to suicide in exile.

If you like happy endings, this novella is not for you. This is an incredibly moving story of Passion with a capital P. Read it and reflect on the frailty of the human condition, and our eternal quest for something greater than ourselves.

The author that makes beauty out of the ordinary

I have loved Zewig since I first read his works in my native language. Reading him in English, though, is such a treat. This is a terrific translation, just what the amazing work of Zweig deserves. Inhaling a work word after word is so fulfilling when every word is but a flavor of an amazing meal for the brain. I know I will reread this again.

Good for studying for the SPI exam!

I used this book and Examination of Ultrasound Review to study for my SPI. Along with notes from my physics class. This book was really good and easier to understand than Kremkau. Although, Edelman sometimes goes too deep into a topic and sometimes he doesn't say enough about a topic. Which is why I also used the ultrasound review book previously mentioned. They worked great together! I also feel that at the back of the ultrasound review book, the test questions were similar to the SPI in the sense that you will always come down to two answers to choose from. I really recommend this book because it covers everything really well! Good luck with studying!

This is the book for ultrasound physics. Easy enough to read and helps to understand the subject. Only thing that would make it better is if it had online access to make it possible to read the book from a computer.

About the Author
Joseph F. Healey is Professor Emeritus of Sociology at Christopher Newport University in Virginia. He received his PhD in sociology and anthropology from the University of Virginia. An innovative and experienced teacher of numerous race and ethnicity courses, he has written articles on minority groups, the sociology of sport, social movements, and violence, and he is also the author of Statistics: A Tool for Social Research (10th ed., 2014).

Eileen O’Brien is an Assistant Professor at SUNY-Brockport where her teaching and research interests range from introductory sociology to courses on race, ethnicity, gender, social class and theory. She authored Whites Confront Racism (Rowan and Littlefield, 2001) and has co-authored White Men on Race (Beacon Press, 2003) with Joe Feagin, a pre-eminent scholar on race and ethnic relations. She received her Ph.D. from the U.of Florida in 1999 M.A. from Ohio State in 1996; both degrees in sociology.

Over the following decades, she achieved sobriety; trained and worked as an alcoholism counselor; raised her children and fostered many others; learned to live with visual impairment; and came out as a lesbian. In 2013, Chacaby led the first gay pride parade in her adopted city, Thunder Bay, Ontario.
Ma-Nee Chacaby has emerged from hardship grounded in faith, compassion, humor, and resilience. Her memoir provides unprecedented insights into the challenges still faced by many Indigenous people.

Into this seemingly lighthearted 7" 10" look into people's love affairs with maps and mapmaking, Harmon packs some serious intellectual concepts about the human impulse to locate itself in the cosmos. Under the loose and expandable categories of "Personal Geography," "At Home in the World" and "Realms of Fantasy," Harmon presents 50 four-color and 50 b&w cartographical illustrations, including Professor Eugene Turner's smily and frowny faces placed on a map of Los Angeles convey data on the unemployment rates, urban stress and racial composition of individual neighborhoods, putting substantive research in a down-to-earth guise. Ellsworth Kelly's "Fields on a Map (Meschers, Gironde)" pulls an abstract pastoral out of a real place, while Kisaburo Ohara makes an octopus-like Russia seem vividly frightening in "A Humorous Diplomatic Atlas of Europe and Asia." Kim Dingle's collection of variously erroneous maps of the United States drawn by American students are equally thought provoking. Harmon has cannily selected a variety of essays, humorous, personal, analytical: e.g., Bridget Booher's chronological "map" of every injustice done to her body, Roger Sheffer's absorbing analysis of the little maps drawn in the registers of shelters along the Appalachian Trail, and Hugh Brogan's professorial elegy for the fantastical maps that used to be printed in Arthur Ransome's children's books. Purists may dislike the way that illustrations of various maps are not linked directly to the texts; others may find it refreshing, much like the kind of map that makes you expect a new and alluring surprise around every corner. Harmon's intricate and thoughtful selections do indeed prove her point that mapmaking is as diverse and extraordinary a human act as any other.

This book is so good that I bought it 3 times. It is so good that I go to it's page every 2 months or so to scroll down and see if any other books on the subject of "abstract maps" have been published that come close to You Are Here's quality. Answer: not yet. This book is a whole bunch of yesses.
