About the Author

Thomas M. Smith, Associate Professor in Environmental Sciences at the University of Virginia, received his Ph.D. in ecology from the University of Tennessee in 1982. The main focus of his research over the past two decades has been to develop an individual based theory of community and ecosystems dynamics. As part of this work he has served on numerous national and international panels that have addressed the potential influence of human activities on the global environment. He has authored over 70 publications based on his research, and he has been recognized as one of the most cited scientists in the field of global change research.

Thomas’s work has taken him to over 70 countries and 6 continents. He has served on the faculty of the University of Witwatersrand (Johannesburg, South Africa), Australian National University (Canberra, Australia), as well as the University of Virginia (Charlottesville, VA, USA). In addition, he has held research scientist positions at both Oak Ridge National Laboratory (Oak Ridge, TN, USA) and the Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (Laxenburg, Austria). His has over 20 years of experience teaching the science of ecology to both science and non-science majors.

Robert L. Smith holds a Ph.D. in Wildlife Biology from Cornell University. He is Professor Emeritus of Ecology at West Virginia University. He has spent over 30 years teaching Ecology and conducting field research throughout the world.

His teaching responsibilities have involved mostly undergraduate courses in general ecology and graduate courses in population ecology and wildlife management. His research has included forest-fire related problems in southern West Virginia, vegetational development and succession on abandoned and reclaimed surface mines, the relation between forest vegetational structure and the forest bird community, and forest habitat assessment and habitat evaluation procedures based on vegetational structure.

Smith has served as a consultant to congressional committees, workshops on environmental education and energy and environmental problems, the National Landmarks program of the U.S. Department of Interior, National Research Council Task Forces on wildlife and fisheries issues and ecological classification systems for implementing environmental quality evaluation procedures.

This book worked great with my class

This book worked great with my class. Very similar to the previous edition so if you need to save money, you could get the older one. It's always recommended that if you've been assigned problems to check out the edition on reserve in your college library just to make sure the numbering hasn't changed. This does tend to happen but very easy to fix if you plan ahead.

Bitesnich knows a good idea when he sees it

Herb Ritts, in Men/Women, 1989, enthralled us with images of women against a stark white wall -- women whose skin Ritts rendered profoundly dark regardless of race. Dennis Manarchy did some amazing pictures in 1990-1991 of a wonderfully muscular black man dressed only in a coat of baby oil, also against a pure white backdrop. Albert Watson, ca. 1989, gave us murky, sexy images of white women rendered so dark as to be indistinguishable from the gloom that enveloped them. Andreas Bitesnich synthesizes these and other similar influences in "Nudes", a series of pictures from about 1993-1998 in a luxuriously produced volume from Edition Stemmle. The images are mostly dark, very simple nudes, male and female, all rendered with very dark skin oiled in varying amounts from just a drop to slathered. The poses are from graceful modern dance with plenty of bulging muscle and extension, and all aloof personae. They are spectacularly beautiful and about as inviting as a pit bull. The pleasure here, for the most part, is a nearly abstract indulgence in sculptured nude humans.

Technically excellent, but artistically disappointing

I was actually fairly disappointed by this book, though it does merit very high marks on the technical issues, i.e. the reproductions are of high quality, and the photographer knew his tools. It's just that I didn't care for the choice of images. Most of the images are very contrasty, moving quickly between almost oily highlights and deep shadows. The poses, while visually interesting, were very artificial and to me, unappealing. I guess the photographer was going for presenting the structure of the body and different kinds of lines you could generate with it. In that regard, he did a good job, but it was not a goal that appealed to me. And one final FYI, the book is black and white -- no value judgement on that, just information that I didn't see elsewhere on this page.

Simply Beautiful

I was so lucky to finally find this book, as all the bookstores I asked had already sold out. Andreas H. Bitesnich must really be the undisputed master of black & white nude photography. This large-format book contains his work through the last decade, and is from start to finish an ode to the human form. Bitesnich avoids all use of props and styling to create mood. Instead he creates human sculputres, using the form itself, and his wonderful sense of lightning. His nudes are highly charged and sexual without borrowing any clich�s. Even the most abstract retain this quality through the gorgeous textrues of skin, simultaneously soft and vulnerable, hard and unobtainable. It is precisely with these contrasts that Bitesnich comes into his own. Simply Beautiful!

like golf? buy this book. like math? buy this book.

full disclosure: my dad wrote this book. it's possible that i might be a bit biased.

first impression? my dad's got jokes! there are little jokes and turns of phrase peppered throughout the book, and the overall tone is light. this is more of a fun read about the relationship between math and golf than it is an academic treatise on applied mathematics. the chapters are set up in a way that lets the reader choose how deeply to dive into the math: more complex topics are relegated to sections at the end of each chapter called 'the back tee.' (see? jokes!) the interesting parts of the books for me were those that used math and statistics to answer questions like 'who is more likely to win, the golfer who plays it safe, or the golfer who takes risks?' and 'which is a better predictor of score: driving skill or putting skill?'

the ideal reader for this book is someone who is into golf and curious about how math can be used to better understand and even improve your game. if you're no mathematician, you can still safely click 'add to cart.' everything is spelled out, and you don't need to be able to calculate, say, standard deviation in order to understand what makes it a useful tool. not a hardcore golfer? that's ok, too! i don't play golf (i "play driving range") but i was still able to follow and enjoy the book. if you can I.D. phil mickelson in a line-up and know the difference between a driver and a putter, you know enough to have a good time with this book.

Persuasive, But Relatively Lite...

Anthony Spare and Paul Ciotti make a logical, but uninspired, case for making Relative Dividend Yield part of one's equity valuation and also one's buy/sell decisions. The book is clearly written and offers ample graphs to substantiate the notion of buying equities when dividend yields are high, and selling them once they are low.
Actually, the graphs may be too ample...readers of this rather expensive 248-page book will quickly learn that the text is a bit long on charts showing individual equity dividend yields relative to stock indexes over time, and a bit short on specifics concerning the avoidance of issues whose yields are high for good reason.
That's the book's essential deficiency: the authors devote a mere twelve overly general pages to "Pitfalls and Preventative Measures" (Chapter 6). Also, since investors will likely have a difficult time constructing the kinds of charts the Relative Dividend Yield methodology requires, it would have been helpful to offer tips on a cost-effective means to make this methodology applicable in real-time. The authors do, however, provide graphs with prior relative dividend yield histories, with room to continue plotting these yields, on several "blue chip" dividend-paying equities.

Something to consider for the dividennd junkie

(edited June/2011) I have come to the conclusion that making larger bets on globally diversified titans is the only way to invest. Look at your greatest investors. Buffett owned six companies that made up 80% of his holdings for decades and trounced the market. Richard Rainwater loaded up on Ensco when oil was trading in the teens. His thesis was bet big to get rich, and diversify to stay rich. My father owned the company stock and reinvested for 30 years and retired in his late 50's. This is not the theory of Spare and Tengler, but taking the best ideas and refining them to ones situation. Funny how I came to this conclusion years ago, but I bought into the diworseification mantra. Spare and Tengler just defined and refined it for me. Certainly, there is due diligence required, but this is almost a foolproof plan. It requires a bit of Graham's due diligence, the patience of Buffett, and with RDY you certainly limit the downside risk. Determing an exit strategy will be the hardest choice you have to make. My copy was old and dated. The book itself and the timliness rates about 3 stars at best. The formula contained within rates 5 stars. I paid more for the shippong than I did for the book. Best $5 bucks I ever spent.

About the Author

Keith J. Jones leads the computer forensics and electronic evidence discovery practices at Red Cliff Consulting. Formerly Foundstone's director of incident response and computer forensics, his book The Anti-Hacker Tool Kit (McGraw-Hill Osborne, 2002) is the definitive guide to securing critical applications.

Richard Bejtlich is a former Air Force intelligence officer, and is founder of TaoSecurity, a network security monitoring consultancy. He wrote the Tao of Network Security Monitoring (Addison-Wesley, 2005) and Extrusion Detection (Addison-Wesley, 2006).

Curtis W. Rose, a former counterintelligence special agent, is an executive vice president at Red Cliff Consulting where he leads research and development efforts and special projects, and where he provides support to criminal investigations and civil litigation. He was a contributing author or technical editor for several security books, including The Anti-Hacker Tool Kit, Network Security: The Complete Reference (McGraw-Hill Osborne, 2002), and Incident Response: Investigating Computer Crime, Second Edition (McGraw-Hill Osborne, 2002).

Simply a great set of books covering systems and network forensics

As you can find in their individual reviews, each book received high marks on its own merit. Put together and this set of three books cannot be beat in the area of system and network forensics.

Although not entrenched in the area of forensics, I do feel that I have a strong technical background upon which to build. I found this series of books refocusing me to think more like a forensics investigator. Not only did I have the opportunity to dig deeper into specific technology areas, but it also reinforced the concepts through scenarios.

Not for the faint of heart, this practical set of books expects you to have a decent technical background to make the best use of it. If you are interested in taking your forensics know-how to the next level, this is a great reference set to be added to your library.

Great book, great info

This set of books is very well written and provides a tremendous amount of information to the reader. I would recommend this set of books to anyone who wants to roll up their sleeves and truly get their hands dirty.

I would not recommend these books for the beginner as the material will quickly give one the feeling of "Drinking from a firehose" without a reasonable amount of knowledge going in. The authors do state that while the books are written to be easy to understand they are not for the beginner.

A. T. Weaver is the pen name of an elderly straight woman living in Kansas City, MO. I have four children, ten grandchildren, and one great-grandson. I live alone with Cleopatra, the cat. There are two questions I get asked most: Why gay novels, and where did you get the name A. T. Weaver. In 2003, I met almost 3,000 gay men via a television show and Yahoo group. They educated me regarding the problems gay people have regarding their rights. They also introduced me to gay movies and books. So many of the stories have such tragic endings, that I decided to write about gay men who love one another and how they are really no different from straight people. As to the name: About twenty-five years ago, I joined a group that recreates the Middle Ages. In that group, I am known as Alisaundre, a nickname of which is Alix. I do dying, spinning and weaving. When I set up my first email account, every combination of my legal name had been taken and I finally came up with alixtheweaver. I didn't want to embarass my children by using their surname on a gay novel. Thus A.(Alix) T.(The) Weaver.

This was a wonderful book to read. Very well written and it is something that is not only possible but it is very much something that we see in the real world. Thank you Ms. Weaver for putting so much work into this book.

Very sweet, changed my life

I liked this book. It was a very sweet story, probably because I identified with Danny a lot. I made my decision to come out after reading this book.

Really enjoyed this one

Really loved this book, much more than I thought I would considering the age difference between the two main characters. I loved how sweet Mike was to Danny and how much they both wanted a loving relationship to form. I was just a little annoyed at how much Danny was influenced by his parents opinion of his relationship but again, I had to consider how old Danny was and how much importance teenagers would place on having parental approval. There was a little too much coincidence at the end of the story with a plot point involving Mike's family but all in all a very satisfying book that I will read again

This story has it all, with a setting descriptively displayed in historic England. The background, down to the tiniest of details has been diligently researched by the author, and it shows. You'll find details of the driver's abilities that only someone who actually drives horses could understand. Add to that the story of the horses and all involved in the coaching industry along with their combined daily trials of the job make this a most interesting read. The best part is the tale behind these details, the heroine and the hero surviving the worst of times. It's a must read with many surprises!!!
