E. B. Sledge was a World War II veteran, author of With the Old Breed, and a professor of biology at the University of Montevallo, Alabama. He died in March 2001.

E. B. Sledge's "With the Old Breed" is by common consent one of the finest -- if not the finest -- account of the life of a combat infantryman in World War II. At Pelieu and Okinawa, Sledge was one of only 10 men in his Marine company of 240 to escape being wounded or killed. "China Marine" is the follow-up to "With the Old Breed," a lesser work but one that tells of what happened to Sledge after the war.

With Sledge's experience, one would have thought that he would have been among the first among the military to be demobilized after the end of the war with Japan -- but no, he and his colleagues were sent to China to disarm the Japanese soldiers there and to maintain order in several northern Chinese cities. This is Sledge's account of the six months he spent in China. His view is that of a Private First Class -- but an educated and sophisticated PFC, the son of a medical doctor from Mobile, Alabama, and an outstanding writer. He delighted in Peking, fresh food, a clean bunk, light duties, and friendship with the sophisticated Soong family -- but the danger from attack by communist armies was always there.

Sledge goes on to tell of the trauma of his discharge from the Marines and homecoming to Mobile and, briefly, his long years of struggle with what we call today Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. It's a small book, only 160 pages, and an interesting, beautifully written, account of the decompression of a combat soldier and his return home.

Sledge died in 2001 but he was often quoted in Ken Burn's recent PBS series on World War II. Sledge is a true American hero.

China Marine: An Infantryman's Life After World War II is the powerful World War II memoir of E. B. Sledge and the sequel to his "With The Old Breed: At Peleliu And Okinawa". Sledge is a veteran of the physical and psychological scars of war, and this former Marine narrates the end of the old China and the rise of the Communist state through the eyes of someone who was there and saw it all. Sledge also presents the troubles of having to adapt to civilian life when the era of combat had faded. A moving true story of balancing life with the immense demands of nobly serving one's country, China Marine is a welcome and recommended contribution to the growing library of World War II era biographies, autobiographies, and memoirs.

The Title Says It All....Another Outstanding Book by Gene Sledge

China Marine Gene Sledge is an old friend although I've never met him. Any book by him is more than worth the few dollars it would take to own it. Most Americans have no knowledge of the fact that immediately following WW II 60,000 U. S. Marines were sent into North China. Their real purpose was to keep that area from falling into the hands of Mao Tse Tsung's 8th Route Army when the Japanese withdrew. We Marines were to fill the gap, and then turn this critical ground that contained much of the coal available in China. The Russians raised hell in the UN about the US not repatriating the Jap troops to their mainland. The US objective was to maintain them in place as additional insurance in order to keep Mao's ChiComs in Manchuria the caves of Yemen where they had been kept in check by the Japs during WW II. With pressure from the UN, the last of the Japs and Koreans were sent home by about June of 1946, leaving a dwindling number of Marines to literally "hold the fort." Essentially, this is what Sledge writes about. Imagine to have survived the battles for Peleliu and Okinawa only to be sent to North China where too many Marines were to be killed. Sledge, because of his time overseas, was able to leave China early in '46, as I recall. Those of us who had arrived late to the Pacific Theater during WW II would remain guarding the railroads and bridges that moved the coal. And so, you say: "How come I haven't read anything about this? It was not mentioned in my History classes in high school or college."

In my case I ended up in Tsingtao on the Shantung Peninsula, until 25Sep48 when I was commissioned a 2dLt and ordered stateside. Within a few months of my leaving China Chiang Kai Shek and his Kuomingtao withdrew to Formosa (Taiwan). My old regiment, the 5th Marines, oversaw the withdrawal of US and other civilians from Shanghai in early '49, and China was from that time under the control of Mao and the Chicoms. I and many other Marines saw a great deal of the latter when they intervened in the Korean War in November/December '50. We Marines were in and around the Chosin Reservoir. The US public knows little of the Korean War, but most at least connect the term Chosin Reservoir to that conflict.

Wonderful romance and much more

Bailey Hampton's life has not been going too well. Her partner of nine years, Chelsea Parker, had walked out on her eleven months earlier. She moved from their home in Denver to Bloomington, Indiana. Neither Bailey or Chelsea cheated or had anyone else in their sights. They would both tell that their split was because they grew apart.

When Bailey is asked to go to Bloomington to interview Eleanor Burnett, (Ellie) longtime companion to the recently deceased movie star Daphne DeMonet, she at first refuses. It would be too painful to bump into Chelsea. Bailey is finally persuaded to take the assignment by top biographer and her friend, Joanne.

When Bailey discovers that Ellie has arranged the interviews to take place with her ex partner Chelsea, Bailey is devastated. How will she cope sitting there with Chelsea, with all the memories of their lost love flooding back when she still loves her?

The meeting is just as hard for Chelsea. Her love for Bailey has never died. It seems neither woman has been able to move on from their pasts.

Ellie is a canny old woman. She realizes there is a past between Bailey and Chelsea and she soon has both women admitting to their faults and failures and what went wrong in their relationship. Who was interviewing who here?

Ellie sets up a series of meetings where she has Bailey and Chelsea taking turns to read her old diaries containing the private lives of her and Daphne, spanning back over their sixty years together.

Ellie is hoping that Bailey and Chelsea will see the similarities between their lives and learn from the mistakes that her and Daphne had made.

Will Bailey and Chelsea know what Ellie is doing? Will they take on board the precious gift being given by Ellie? Or will it be too late for them to repair their relationship? They love one another, but is love enough?

First of all I have to say, this book is great. The story is well written and Chris has, in my opinion, done a lot of research. This is an epic love story between Ellie, longtime companion of Daphne and also the lost romance between Bailey and Chelsea.

Ellie and Daphne's story is mainly told through reading Ellie's diaries, dating back from the beginning of their romance sixty years earlier, until the end of their lives together. These diaries tell of all the ups and downs of lesbian life and the consequences of being gay in the movie world. They tell of the laughter and the tears, of happiness and betrayal, of love found and lost, of coming round in a full circle and love everlasting.

Ellie's diaries are almost a book on their own. I got to know both Ellie and Daphne and to actually feel their emotional highs and lows. It was as if their emotions radiated off the page. Their story is both beautiful and sad. A story of a great unshakeable love spanning decades, a love that even when apart, meant they were really together.

The movie world along with all the scenic descriptions of both America and England had me imagining I was a part of their lives. I felt Ellie and Daphne were my friends.

The second story in this book is of the lost love between Bailey and Chelsea. In many ways their love story was similar to Ellie and Daphne's. I could see where Ellie thought they could learn a lot from her and Daphne's experiences. After all, a true love is love, whichever decade you are in or whatever age you are.

Chris has written this book with care and a great deal of passion for her characters that shines through. Not only did she practically write two stories, but Ellie is a Brit and some parts of the story takes place in England. Chris has also written Ellie's dialogue using the British language.

I quite honestly think this is the best book Chris has ever written. I've read all her books, but this one simply tops them all. A definite re-read in the very near future.

This is Paynter's fourth book and undoubtedly her best so far. It shows the maturity that is developing in her writing and her ability to tell a story that is intricate, but deceptively simple. When the book opens it appears to be another version of the girls lost/girls found formula, but it quickly turns into something else. First, it presents a poignant history of what life was like for gay and lesbian actors in Hollywood during the 1950s. Even McCarthyism makes an appearance. A reader can't help but think of the lives of people like Rock Hudson and what they went through. Eleanor and Daphne's story, as they duck, weave and deceive their ways through the political and social climates of the time, is interesting enough to sell the book. The bonus is in watching what happens to Bailey and Chelsea as they become invested in Eleanor and the story. There is a gentle lesson that unfolds as they come to realize that relationships take work and that there are greater priorities than careers and always getting things the way you want them.

Survived By Her Longtime Companion is one of those books that draws you slowly into the story and causes you to care about the characters. The reader will probably find herself wishing that these were real people, people that she could get to know. If nothing else, the story is very appealing and certainly worth the time to read it. It also is the type of book that will encourage the reader to want to read Paynter's next publication.

I don't usually puchase books without reading some reviews for it, but this didn't have any yet so I took a chance. I'm very glad I did! This book was essentially two in one. There was the story of Bailey's relationship, and Ellie's relationship. I loved how the author took you from the present to the past in this story. It was very well written. If you have enjoyed Chris's other books you will not be dissapointed with this one.

Important book for college students

It is a book I was looking for quite a while in English language. It requires some serious background in Arabic (at least at level of Access 3 from Bayyinah), however still the book fills a major gap in the English language. It brings more precision to the arguments on why do Muslims believe that Quran is from God and why those theories fail which tries to justify Quran as work of a human. More literature is needed along the lines of this in the English language, however this is a good start.
