About the Author
Robert Bogdan is Distinguished Professor of Social Science at Syracuse University. He is the author of many books including Exposing the Wilderness: Early Twentieth-Century Adirondack Postcard Photographers and Adirondack Vernacular: The Photography of Harry M. Beach, both published by Syracuse University Press. His column on real photo postcards is a monthly feature in the magazine The Postcard Collector. Todd Weseloh was the librarian/archivist at the Erie Canal Museum in Syracuse and has been an active collector of postcards since 1976.

In the thirty five years of collecting postcards, with real photo post cards my speciality, there has never been a good book, until now covering this subject.

This book of 274 pages covers all aspects of what one would ever wish to know about this form of collectiing. Major chapter headings are: Introduction, Fundamentals, Photographers & Careers, Dimensions of Desirability,Collecting Categories, Objects to Treasure, Sitting in the Graveyard & Conclusion. Each chapter has many subdivisions, very well marked in the table of contents by page number. At the end is a very complete appendix & index. Being on the subject of photographs there are naturally a great number, totaling around 270.

The only reason I did not rate this 5 star is that the quality of the photo reproduction is not in keeping with the tremendous efforts the authors have put into this book. Though the photos are O.K., with todays technology, I feel the publisher let the authors down.

Collectors have been waiting a long time for a book like this, & I very much doubt that there is more to be said on this subject. The authors are to be congradulated on a job well done.

Encyclopedic but with an artist eye

What makes this book exceptional is that it provides both a good history, and fundamentals, while including around 300 superb examples of real photo cards. For the text there is a quick history of postcards and photography. For those trying to date cards, there are good hints, and the inclusion of appendix on dating based on stamps and the backs is a big help. By looking at the background of a few photographers, the reader is help to understand the life of a professional photographer of the time. This is supplemented by a discussion on how the author researched the life of photographer William Mandeville, and the appendix includes a brief paragraph on around 200 photographers. The longest chapter is on categories, with over 100 examples, and some favorites included "After shooting the oil tank", ""Calvin Coolidge plowing", and an early Coca-cola delivery truck.

Why I have purchased this book TWICE

Real Photo Postcards are the under-appreciated stepchild of early Photography. Just as scarce and just as interesting as ANY early vernacular photographic technique, it is still possible to assemble a good collection at an affordable price. This book taught me everything I needed to know the first time I put together a nice RPPC collection...and it is doing the same as I do it again. At this point, by far the best book on the subject!

About the Author
Marianne Woodside, Professor Emerita, was affiliated with the Human Services, Mental Health Counseling, and Counselor Education programs at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She taught introduction to human services, case management, methods of helping, and foundations of counselor education, and supervises practicum and internship. Her primary research interests are international human services, human service education, and case management. Dr. Woodside has served on the editorial boards for Journal of Human Service Education, American Association for Counseling and Development Journal, and Tennessee Counseling Journal. Additionally, she served as vice-president of regional development and secretary of the National Organization for Human Services Education. Dr. Woodside has published a wide range of journal articles and has an extensive record of presentations at national and international meetings. Her many awards include the Distinguished Recognition Award from the Council for Standards in Human Service Education, the Professional Development Research Award from the National Organization for Human Services Education, the Helen B. Watson Outstanding Faculty Research Award, and the Educator's Hall of Honor Award. Her research broadly deals with case management in human service delivery, professional development, and international human services. Dr. McClam has served as editor of International Education and co-editor of Human Service Education, both refereed journals. Included among her professional awards are the Helen B. Watson Outstanding Faculty Research Award in the College of Education, the Dean's Award for Service, a Certificate of Appreciation from the Council for Standards in Human Service Education, and the Miriam Clubok Award from the National Organization for Human Service Education. I have purchased the 1st edition and just now got this second edition of this book. I must say it is very consistent! The topics covered in this book are unique and explained it in a layman language. Once again the author has done a great job in delivering the second part! Interesting read for whoever wants to learn further in Astrology.

I also love the illustrations and the beautiful art work. I am enjoying studying Vedic astrology with this well-written, wonderful book.

Awful Amazon Kindle Quality - Great Book

This is a great title to read if you are interested in Gay Telese. However, be wary of the kindle edition that Amazon is selling here. It is so loaded with typos that the end of chapter 7 can be unreadable. I found myself having to infer the words the author had originally written. The fact that Amazon is charging $10 for this quality is a total rip off. Do yourself a favor and buy a used paper copy of the book for far cheaper so you can read it as the author intended. Support any used/local book seller over Amazon.

Simple story of things larger than life

In "The Bridge", Gay Talese tells the story of the men behind the scenes, the men who do the dirty work in bridge-building (as well as other city building projects) without the recognition, the speeches, or the parades. Talese centers the story around the construction of the Verrazano Bridge in New York, one of the world's largest and most impressive pieces of architecture built by some of the world's bravest and least heralded men.

You can tell that Talese spent a great deal of time with these men, their families, and the people most affected by the Verrazano's construction in the 1960's -- the residents of Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. Most of the book is a collection of anecdotes focusing on the life of a "boomer", in which bridgebuilding and ironworking is seemingly passed down from generation to generation; the outrage in Brooklyn over the condemnation of hundreds of homes and businesses, who these Brooklynites were and where they went; the Indians who drove home to the Canadian border on weekends to see their families before leaving Sunday night to drive back down to the job; and so on.

Talese sheds a sufficient amount of light on the actual bridge construction, as well as some history and the famous designer, Othmar Ammann. He conveys perfectly the emotional ties people have to the bridge (both positive and negative), the almost magnetic pull the work has to those men who have building in their blood, and the "fever" they experience when the job is done. You'll never have heard of these men before, because they're gone to the next job by the time the final touches are put on, and only the politcians and designers find their names in print or smile for the cameras. It's a story of human emotion and accomplishment, and of a very proud fraternity of men, that Talese tells skillfully.

Its All About the People

My Uncle was a "boomer." I never understood that much of his life when I was a kid growing up. He would roll into town in his big car with all of his clothing hanging from a rod across the back seat. He was a big man and a drinker and a whiz at poker, pool, and any game of chance. I never understood my Uncle then. He respected his older sister, my Mother, and was always at odds with my Father. He had part of his wages sent to my Mother to hold for him so he wouldn't spend it all. After reading "The Bridge" I understand my Uncle a little better.

While it is a story of the bridge, it is more a story of the people that created the bridge - from those that planned it, designed it, gave up their homes for it, those that built it, and those that maintain it.

It is one of the finest books that I have read - a treasure from start to finish.

How can he win in his new, self-assumed role as "Mr. Helpful" when his divorced parents are out of control, his Grandma is surly and morbid, and Olivia, the mean blind girl he's forced to homeschool with, calls him a "hyper retard"? Grade 4-8-Joey's back, and this time he's not doing as much of the "weird Joey stuff" as usual. Now that he's ready to be "Mr. Helpful," it seems that everyone around him needs more help than he can give. His mom and dad have crazy fights involving motorcycle crashes, kidnapped Chihuahuas, and a restraining order. Joey's new homeschool partner is Olivia, a blind girl who earns the title of "Mistress of All Evil," and whose fundamentalist mother teaches them. And Grandma, the person who best understands Joey, is dying. The boy's first-person narration is as frenetically fun as it was in the first two books. Here, though, his energy and insights are turned more on those around him, and he turns out to be terrifically perceptive. His observations are totally believable because he vividly recalls (and sometimes still indulges in) dysfunctional behavior. His ability to connect with several diversely troubled personalities sets up many humorous scenes. A convoluted, but oddly logical scheme involving Olivia, Grandma, and tickets to Godspell culminates in the boy's touching (and very funny) first date. By book's end, Joey has lost a loved one, but he has gained enough confidence, and even wisdom, to look out for himself without letting his external problems overwhelm him or hold him back. Readers who don't know Joey will have no trouble jumping right in with this book, and those who have met him in the previous books will enjoy the way "Mr. Helpful" tries to set things right in a chaotic and uniquely amusing world.

This is a student's book, but I like to preview the books. It's another of the "crazy antics of Joey Pigza" books. Loved it.

"My dad showed up on a motorcycle and my mom who claims not to like him stuck a broom in the spokes yesterday as he buzzed our front yard and he ended up flying through the air and stabbing himself on a tree branch, so then I thought she liked him again but it turns out she didn't because later she tried to hit him in the face with a water glass in front of her new boyfriend." This is just one prime example of how chaotic Joey Pigza's life is.

This moving, yet comical novel brings you through the challenging moments of Joey Pigza's life. His goal throughout this fictional is to help everyone that comes in contact with him happy. Being a blind girl's classmate and "Secret Helper", putting all of the items that are out of order back in place at the grocery store, returning all of the lost dogs back to their home, trying to help his family become somewhat normal, and convincing his grandma that she will not die tomorrow, his grandma teaches him that he needs to stop trying to make the world happy, and focus on making himself happy.

Jack Gantos has written numerous books such as the Rotten Ralph children picture books. He is the author of many novels such as the series of the Joey Pigza novels, Joey Pigza Swallowed the Key,Joey Pigza Loses Control, and What Would Joey Do? Jack Gantos also wrote Heads or Tails, Jack's Black Book, Jack's New Power, and Jack on the Tracks. Jack Gantos's writing style is easy yet fun to read as he keeps you so interested you don't want to place the book down.

I would recommend What Would Joey Do? to the fifth through the seventh grade student. This novel is fascinating to any gender. From reading all of the Joey Pigza books, What Would Joey Do? is a definite must.
