Bryan has more than 25 years of consulting, programming, and system design experience in the IBM midrange arena. He is the author if RPG IV Jump Start, 2nd edition, published by 29th Street Press.

Dan Riehl is a technical editor for NEWS/400 and president of PowerTech Toolworks, Inc., a Seattle-based firm providing AS/400 technical education and support. 1.1. What CL Is

AS/400 Control Language (CL) is a set of commands that you use to control operations and to request system-related functions on the IBM AS/400 computer. IBM provides CL as an integrated part of the OS/400 operating system, not as a separate product.

As a means of controlling workflow, CL serves purposes comparable to Job Control Language (JCL) on mainframe computers. CL, however, provides much more functionality than JCL. In some respects, CL is similar to the PC-DOS (Disk Operating System) commands you may use on a PC. DOS operations like copying files, redirecting output, and making directories have direct CL counterparts. CL originated on the IBM System/38 computer in the late 1970s and continued as the principal system control language when the AS/400 was introduced in 1988. The AS/400 version of CL provided many enhancements over the S/38 version, including new commands and other added functionality. However, because of similarities between the S/38 and AS/400 versions of CL, many S/38 CL commands and programs can be used on the AS/400, and vice versa.

A single CL statement is called a command. A CL command is the primary means of interacting with the AS/400. Nearly everything the AS/400 does is requested by a command. There are commands to create and delete objects, commands to start programs, a command to power down the system, and even a command to create a command.

You can think of a command as an instruction to the computer to perform a function. For example, the DLTF (Delete File) command instructs the AS/400 to delete a file from the system; this command would be comparable to the DEL command, which is a part of DOS on personal computers.

Most CL commands are supplied by IBM as part of the operating system, but you also can create your own commands, customized to your own installation’s particular needs.

CL, as shipped by IBM, consists of more than 1,000 commands but still maintains a usefulconsistency that makes the language easy to learn and to understand. Most CL commands can be used at least two ways: (1) by typing them individually onto an AS/400 command line, or (2) by grouping them together into a CL program. CL programs typically consist of multiple CL commands that define procedures or operations on the AS/400. By combining multiple commands within a CL program you can automate most AS/400 operations.

You should write CL programs to perform repetitive processing, because CL programs will reduce errors and operator/user intervention. CL also is a natural choice for many utility programs that control or monitor system-related activities on the AS/400. Figure 1.1 lists a few of the many functions that CL can perform.

1.2. What CL Is Not

Although CL is very rich in function, it is not — in the classical sense of the term — considered to be a high-level language (HLL). You would not, for example, write a payroll application using CL exclusively. For such application programming on the AS/400, you would use a combination of CL and a HLL such as RPG or COBOL. You would use CL to implement the system-related procedures and functions of the application and you would use the HLL to perform such operations as screen handling, file updates, and complex business logic. CL is used to manipulate and control the application’s execution environment, generally as a “front end” to the HLL application programs.

Why wouldn’t you use CL exclusively to create a typical business application? Because many functions perform better or are easier to write using a HLL, and CL just cannot do some computer operations. For example, CL programs cannot add or update records in a database file and CL has very limitedprinting capabilities.. CL programs do not support the use of AS/400 subfiles within application displays, nor do they support individual fields in AS/400 program-described files. Database manipulations are limited to reading files and only a single file can be opened for I/O operations in a CL program. These missing pieces in CL make it unsuitable for developing a complete business application.

1.3. Controlling Workflow with CL

CL programs control the workflow of an application by allowing you to create jobstreams, which consist of CL commands to be executed in order. Within a CL program you can alter the order of execution by testing various conditions that may exist during the execution of a job. You can monitor for errors that might occur while running a job and perform corrective actions or abort the job. You can pass values, or parameters, to and from CL programs to make them more flexible and to permit or restrict the execution of blocks of program code. A CL program can incorporate conditional logic and special functions that are not available when you enter individual commands on a command line. You can also test and debug a CL program, just like any HLL program.

CL programs, unlike JCL , are implemented as compiled program objects, rather than interpreted job streams. A CL program is a permanent object on the AS/400, created by compiling a group of CL commands.

Great book for learning CL - even for beginners

This book is great for learning CL. It's easy to read, goes slowly and gets you writing programs in no time. It covers most of the topics you would have to deal with such as submitting jobs and commands as batch jobs, printer and file overrides, error handling, data queues and user defined commands. It even gives tips about how to make your CL code easier to read and using positional parameters so you don't have to type more than you need to.

The book is what I expected and is easy to use for someone with some iseries experience. This book isn't a beginners guide about using the iseries and does not explain how to use your terminal session. It does get you going using PDM and SEU. It does have a section about ILE programming and CL in that context, so it isn't just your old-school CL.

If you need to learn CL, this is a good book to start from.

Best AS400 book so far

I'm so glad I bought this book. It's the best $15 that I've spent at Amazon.com. I bought it used and had some coffee marks in the first few chapters, but boy, this book is great! It also gives you an introduction of the AS/400 (OS/400). I know Windows, VMS, and UNIX, and I'm interested to know the AS400 because the product that I support also runs on the AS/400 platform. I sorted of gotten some ideas here and there but I wanted to learn more. This book is so great! My first AS400 book and I love it. I've ordered a few more other AS400 books together with this one; and have paid a lot more for the others. But this one beat them all! It's a very good book!

A calm introduction to CL on the iSeries

This book was required for my class on CL programming on the iSeries. The author's style of writing is very clean and clear and he walks with you in describing CL programming and how to create some basic functional programs that are likely used in the real world. I like this book because it has many, many examples and talks with you rather than at you. The author understands that you are new to this topic.

I would surely recommend this book to somebody who is new to CL programming on the AS/400 / iSeries. This book will be a great source to have on the edge of my desk.

About the Author
Jayne Anne Phillips was born in Buckhannon, West Virginia. She is the author of three novels, MotherKind (2000), Shelter (1994) and Machine Dreams (1984), and two collections of widely anthologized stories, Fast Lanes (1987) and Black Tickets (1979). She is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship, two National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships, and a Bunting Fellowship. She has been awarded the Sue Kaufman Prize for First Fiction (1980) and an Academy Award in Literature (1997) by the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Her work has been translated into twelve languages, and has appeared in Granta, Harper’s, DoubleTake, and The Norton Anthology of Contemporary Fiction. She is currently Professor of English and Director of the MFA Program at Rutgers-Newark, the State University of New Jersey. Her new novel, Lark and Termite, is forthcoming from Knopf.

Keep at it

I had to read Machine Dreams as part of a school course at University at first it appeared to be nothing special, who were all these characters, did I care waht this woman, was telling her daughter and who were they anyway? I read the first section, then put it away for a while. When I started to read it again it was sooo good. It does take a while to get into but it is well worth percivering. At the end of the book I was so caugh t up with the up with the characters it was unbelivable considering my initial reaction to the book. The links in the book become obvious as you read on and the treatment of time as none linear works well. There are central themes in the book, such as the strenght of the women characters and the way in which they deal with the things that happen. I was told the book was about the Vietmnam war but I don't personnaly think that this was the main point of the book, it is a key factor but how could it not be. After reading the book I was left feeling very aware of the feeling I have for my friends and family, it is difficult not to become emotionally involved in the book. Finally - GO READ IT! (And don't give up on it.) I only gave the book 4 stars because of my initial desire not to read it after the first section - This is probably more my problem than the books.

Revealing our dreams

I've read Machine Dreams twice and I was completly moved. It is like a picture of modern America where everyone travels alone, like in a dream, and the same time is in the middle of a crowd into reality. Philip's talended writing expresses desires and feelings of every woman and their struggle to remain unique. But it is not a feminist book. male characters are very strong too. Its structure and the different narrator in each chapter show the different kind of characters and the different aspects of the American society

A fine family chronicle

Jane Anne Phillips' 1984 first novel Machine Dreams is an affecting and carefully-wrought chronicle of an American family through this century, culminating in the tragedy of Vietnam brought home through a beloved son's/brother's death. Phillips constructs the novel by focusing each section on a different family member, alternating also between first and third person narrators. Her use of language and characterizations are strong throughout. This is a fine book.

My husband an I started our real estate career flipping houses in the 1980s in Denver, Colorado. Since that time, we have acquired rentals and flipped a lot of homes. We loved the whole process, especially making a home look great for the next owner or renter.      As I would work on a home,  my mind would worker harder than my hands. I was continually thinking about how to do this business better. How could we be better landlords? How could we turn houses over more quickly? How could we avoid so many of the lessons we learned the hard way? About the Author

Darlene Clark Hine

Darlene Clark Hine is a board of trustees professor of African-American studies and professor of history at Northwestern University. She is a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and a former president of the Organization of American Historians and of the Southern Historical Association. Hine received her B.A. at Roosevelt University in Chicago and her MA. and Ph.D. from Kent State University in Kent, Ohio. Hine has taught at South Carolina State University,  Purdue University and at Michigan State University. She was a fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University and at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Studies at Harvard University. She is the author and/or co-editor of 15 books, most recently The Harvard Guide to African American History (Cambridge: Harvard University Press, 2000), co-edited with Evelyn Brooks Higginbotham and Leon Litwack. She co-edited a two-volume set with Earnestine Jenkins, A Question of Manhood: A Reader in Black Men’s History and Masculinity (Bloomington: Indiana University Press, 1999, 2001) and one with Jacqueline McLeod, Crossing Boundaries: Comparative History of Black People in Diaspora (Bloomington: Indiana University Press, 2000pk). With Kathleen Thompson she wrote A Shining Thread of Hope: The History of Black Women in America (New York: Broadway Books, 1998) and edited More Than Chattel: Black Women and Slavery in the Americas (Bloomington: Indiana University Press, 1996) with Barry Gaspar. She won the Dartmouth Medal of the American Library Association for the reference volumes co-edited with Elsa Barkley Brown and Rosalyn Terborg-Penn, Black Women in America: An Historical Encyclopedia (New York: Carlson Publishing, 1993). She is the author of Black Women in White: Racial Conflict and Cooperation in the Nursing Profession, 1890–1950 (Bloomington: Indiana University Press, 1989). Her forthcoming book is entitled The Black Professional Class: Physicians, Nurses, Lawyers, and the Origins of the Civil Rights Movement, 1890–1955.

 

William C. Hine

William C. Hine received his undergraduate education at Bowling Green State University, his master’s degree at the University of Wyoming and his Ph.D. at Kent State University. He is a professor of history at South Carolina State University. He has had articles published in several journals, including Agricultural History, Labor History and the Journal of Southern History. He is currently writing a history of South Carolina State University.

 

Stanley Harrold

Stanley Harrold, Professor of History at South Carolina State University, received his bachelor’s degree from Allegheny College and his master’s degree and Ph.D. from Kent State University. He is co-editor of Southern Dissent, a book series published by the University Press of Florida. In 1991-1992 and 1996-1997 he had National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowships. In 2005 he received an NEH Faculty Research Award.  His books include: Gamaliel Bailey and Antislavery Union (Kent, Ohio:  Kent State University Press, 1986), The Abolitionists and the South (Lexington: University Press of Kentucky, 1995), Antislavery Violence: Sectional, Racial, and Cultural Conflict in Antebellum America (co-edited with John R. McKivigan; Knoxville: University of Tennessee Press,  1999), American Abolitionists (Harlow, U.K.: Longman, 2001), Subversives: Antislavery Community in Washington, D.C., 18280-1865 (Baton Rouge: Louisiana State University Press, 2003), The Rise of Aggressive Abolitionism: Addresses to the Slaves (Lexington: University Press of Kentucky, 2004), Civil War and Reconstruction: A Documentary Reader (Oxford, U.K.: Blackwell, 2007) and Border War: Fighting over Slavery before the Civil War (Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina Press, 2010). He has published articles in Civil War History, Journal of Southern History, Radical History Review and Journal of the Early Republic.

Odyssey????

This is a text book but the slavery subject has clearly been sanitized in language to appease those who might be offended by the subject. A example of this is under the caption of "African Women on Slave Ships", exact language "African women did not enjoy the same protection against unwanted sexual attention from European men that European women received." CAN YOU BELIEVE IT? This is the manner in which this text conveys how African women were repeatedly raped and demoralized during the Middle Passage.

I was reminded that this is a text book and has to be politically acceptable to be a text book. Oh well. Even the title distressing me. The definition of Odyssey is to have an adventure. I don't think I can look upon African Americans since their arrival to the Americas as "an adventure" but who am I to question.

There is however some very good history information about other events that occurred in the lives of African Americans in these United States.

About the Author
Rob Brooker (Ph.D., Yale University) received his B.A. in biology at Wittenberg University, Springfield, Ohio, in 1978. At Harvard, he studied lactose permease, the product of the lacY gene of the lac operon. He continues working on transporters at the University of Minnesota, where he is a Professor in the Department of Genetics, Cell Biology, and Development and has an active research laboratory. At the University of Minnesota, Dr. Brooker teaches undergraduate courses in biology, genetics, and cell biology. In addition to many other publications, he has written two undergraduate genetics texts published by McGraw-Hill: Genetics: Analysis & Principles, 4th edition, copyright 2012, and Concepts of Genetics, copyright 2012.

A great rental. A fantastic textbook for Genetics

This was the textbook my professor used to instruct Genetics.

Overall, I would rate this book 5/5. The author does a very good job at describing the details of genetics, and trust me there is a LOT of details, while at the same time summarizing the key take away with figures, diagrams, and tables. The diagrams that supplement the text ensure the reader understands what they are reading with beautiful illustrations. The information is organized very well, and the material is presented in a very friendly manner to students. With that said, this is genetics we are talking about, which is no cake walk. This is a class that requires some background information in general biology and chemistry to fully appreciate and comprehend. But the author does a fantastic job at teaching you what you need to know. Definitely one of the best textbooks that I have read on such a complex topic.

Concepts are fully explained in a language to be understood. There are concept checks at the end of each section of a chapter and a review at the end of each chapter. Review questions allow the student to apply all that has been presented. I do suggest getting the companion Student Study Guide/Solutions Manual for extra practice.

About the Author
"Joseph J. Mistovich, M.Ed, NREMT-P." Joseph Mistovich is the Chairperson of the Department of Health Professions and a Professor at Youngstown State University in Youngstown, Ohio. He has 18 years of experience as an educator in emergency medical services and multidisciplinary allied health courses, including advanced cardiac life support.

Mr. Mistovich received his Master of Education degree in Community Health Education from Kent State University in 1988. He completed a Bachelor of Science in Applied Science degree with a major in Allied Health in 1985 and an Associate in Applied Science degree in Emergency Medical Technology in 1982 from Youngstown State University. He is also certified as a Nationally Registered Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic. Mr. Mistovich has over 22 years of experience providing advanced life support in the prehospital environment. He is an author or co-author of several EMS textbooks. He is a frequent presenter at local, state, and national conferences.

"Randall W. Benner, M.Ed, NREMT-P." Randall Benner, Instructor in the Department of Health Professions at Youngstown State University, has over 16 years of experience as an educator in emergency medical services and as a field paramedic. He serves as the Director of the Emergency Medical Technology Program at Youngstown State University and is responsible for all levels of emergency medical education. In addition, he actively functions as a paramedic on an advanced life support unit.

Mr. Benner has served as a contributing author for a variety of EMS textbooks and instructor resource materials. He also serves as a medical content reviewer for emergency medical services and allied healthpublications. He is a contributing author to the revision of the United States..Department of Transportation National Standard EMT Intermediate and Paramedic curricula. He serves on several local, state, and national EMS committees. Mr. Benner is completing his Ph.D program in curriculum and instructional design at Kent State University.

"Gregg S. Margolis, MS, NREMT-P." Gregg S. Margolis has been involved in emergency medicine and emergency medical education for over 20 years. He served as a faculty member and in leadership positions in the Departments of Emergency Medicine in two major academic institutions. In addition to his clinical, research, and educational experience, Mr. Margolis served as the Principal Investigator for the development of the Paramedic and EMT Intermediate National Standard Curricula. He is a renowned expert and frequent lecturer on a variety of topics in emergency medicine and the author of dozens of publications. Mr. Margolis consults nationally and internationally in emergency medical services development and education.
